### Definition

국토 면적은 국가의 총 면적에서 내륙 수역, 대륙붕에 대한 국가적 권리, 배타적 경제 수역을 제외한 면적을 의미합니다. 대부분의 경우, 내륙 수역의 정의에는 주요 강과 호수가 포함됩니다.

세계 지도를 표현하는데 있어 일반적으로 사용되는 [메르카토르 투영법(Mercator Projection)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator%5Fprojection?ref=kr.vizney.com)의 경우, 고위도로 갈수록 면적이 과장되어 왜곡이 심해지는 현상이 있습니다.   
이 대시보드에서는 정확한 국토의 면적을 비교하기 위하여 [갈-피터스 투영법(Gall-Peters projection)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall%E2%80%93Peters%5Fprojection?ref=kr.vizney.com)을 사용하였기에, 극지방에 가까운 러시아, 캐나다 등의 국토의 모양이 흔히 알던 모양과 차이가 있을 수 있습니다.
